Many of us wish we could just get rid of anxiety entirely. Not only is that unrealistic, but it isn’t healthy. A little anxiety can help you stay regulated and prepared for stressful situations. In fact, trying to suppress anxiety or push it away just makes it worse. Leaving it unaddressed allows it to fester and come back stronger, putting even more stress on your life.

What To Expect In Anxiety Counseling Sessions

Anxiety can arise for many different reasons. Sometimes it’s the result of past trauma or difficult circumstances. Other times it’s due to genetics or brain chemistry. Therapy is a chance to explore the root causes of anxiety and figure out why it continues to affect you today. Oftentimes, this means looking at unexpressed emotions you’re holding onto and refusing to let go. There may be unresolved fear, anger, or grief that you’ve been keeping bottled up inside. 

As your therapist, my role is helping you release these unexpressed emotions. I will give you somatic exercises and calming techniques to help you get in touch with your body and open yourself to whatever emotions you feel. After all, the body is the storehouse of anxiety. There is wisdom in trying to understand what it’s telling you. I’ll help you pay attention to your body’s clues—sweaty palms, shortness of breath, a racing heart, etc.—so that you can recognize the signs of anxiety and release it from your body.

Once you let go of the distressing emotions you’ve been holding inside, you may find it easier to step out of your comfort zone, take advantage of new opportunities, and make new connections. Your relationships may improve and you may feel more present in your day-to-day life. Instead of feeling stressed and overwhelmed, you can feel grounded, serene, and at peace with yourself and those around you. In this way, therapy can benefit every area of your life.

I feel like my problem is more physical than emotional. How can therapy help with that?

Anxiety is very much a physical phenomenon—your body knows before your brain does. What’s more, the brain and body are inherently interconnected. Your emotions are very powerful and can cause many physical symptoms, such as sweaty palms, muscular tension, and lack of sleep or appetite. Anxiety treatment can equip you with grounding skills so that you feel more at home in your body and less prone to panic attacks, aches and pains, and other physical manifestations of stress.

What if I can’t afford anxiety therapy?

Your finances are important and I would never want to stretch your wallet thin. But at the same time, I encourage you to ask yourself: can you afford to not seek help? After all, if you’re reading this page, that means that anxiety is probably negatively impacting your life. Building a relationship with a trained professional is critical to managing anxiety effectively and taking back control of your life.

What if I’m judged for the things I share in sessions?

I am unconditionally accepting in my approach to therapy—you never have to worry about judgment here. This is a safe space where you can share whatever is on your mind without any reservations. And if you don’t want to open up right away, that’s okay. I will go at a pace that’s right for you. With time, I am confident that you will come to feel comfortable sharing things here that you wouldn’t share in the world outside.
